All the information on outdoor perimeter alarms

Can I install an alarm system in the outdoor area of my home? Can I install any of my alarm’s sensors outside? Many people ask themselves these questions when they want to install a home alarm system and have a garden or outdoor area they’d like to protect. The answer is yes, but there are a few caveats. It is possible to install detectors outside to protect a garden, a plot of land, a balcony or a terrace, but there are a number of factors to bear in mind if you want to avoid any problems.

Services offered by Sector Alarm

Sector Alarm offers its customers a range of services as part of its connected alarm contracts; some are included in the packages, whilst others are available as optional extras.

Here are the most interesting ones:

24-hour connected alarm with police notification: Sector Alarm’s connected alarms contact the police within approximately 30 seconds in the event of a robbery, break-in or intrusion.

This is because they are fully and completely approved by the Directorate-General of Police, and because, via the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), they assess the level of threat and can alert the police, fire service or medical services if necessary.

This is the system’s most important feature, and the one that truly gives us peace of mind and security. Not only will we trigger a high-powered siren, as conventional, unconnected alarms do, but we will also have the support of both the company’s security guards and the police.

Acuda Security Guard: In the event of a positive alarm trigger, the control centre uses the sensors to identify the problem and alerts its certified security guards, who will come to your home to resolve the issue.

Mobile app. Control your alarm system from your smartphone: The Sector Alarm app controls the most important aspects of the alarm system, such as:

  • Turn the alarm on or off
  • Check on your home in real time, thanks to its video detectors.
  • Videos are uploaded to the cloud, so you won’t be dependent on your phone’s storage or network coverage.
  • Receive real-time notifications when someone leaves or enters your home

Types of perimeter alarms

Perimeter alarms are offered by some of the leading security companies, such as ADT, but each company operates differently.

There are various types of perimeter detectors, so it is important to seek expert advice and carry out a detailed assessment to find out exactly what you need:

  • Infrared barriers: the most commonly used and, what’s more, easy to install. They consist of two separate components: one emits an infrared light and the other emits an audible signal
  • Access control system: these alarms restrict access and only allow authorised staff to enter
  • Fence sensors: these perimeter alarms are fitted to the fence around your property. If anyone tries to climb over it, the alarm is triggered immediately and alerts the security monitoring centre.
  • Microwave barriers: these consist of a transmitter and a receiver, which are installed opposite each other. This creates invisible waves that detect any intrusion.
  • With buried sensors: as the name suggests, these sensors are buried so that they are as inconspicuous as possible.
  • Video sensors: these detect any activity via their motion sensor. In addition, cameras must be positioned in strategic locations to capture images of the intruder.

How does a perimeter alarm system work?

Should an intruder gain access to an outdoor area of the house protected by a perimeter detector, this will trigger the alarm system, set off the siren and contact the security monitoring centre, which will then verify what is happening and take appropriate action.

This enables us to trigger an alarm and alert the police before burglars or squatters manage to break into the property. And that, in turn, allows us to buy time and even prevent them from getting in, as they usually flee when they realise they have been detected by a security system.

Another benefit of outdoor detectors is that they allow us to keep the alarm switched on whilst we are inside the house or whilst we are asleep. This means we can leave the indoor detectors switched off and the outdoor ones switched on, so that we can move about freely within our home whilst remaining protected by the perimeter alarms.

What is the main advantage of perimeter sensors?

Well, the detection is early – in other words, if a burglar or a squatter tries to get onto your property, the sensors trigger the garden alarm.

And the CRA notifies the police before they enter your home.

Whenever an intruder crosses the infrared beams, the alarm system will be triggered. The main benefit is that we detect the intrusion before it reaches the interior of the property or the entrances to your home or business.

In what sort of property is a perimeter alarm necessary?

If your property has a terrace or garden, a perimeter alarm may be necessary.

Why? Well, because, generally speaking, holiday homes, country houses or detached houses with gardens are usually the most likely to be burgled or squatted in.

Not only are they an easy target for burglars, but also for squatters. Perimeter alarms are also a fairly effective type of anti-squatter security system, as they allow you to detect and record the squatter the moment they break in.

This enables the CRA to alert the police and proves that it is a case of unlawful entry, meaning the squatters will not be able to take possession of your home.

Benefits of installing a perimeter fence

  1. The most important thing is that with this type of alarm, we can detect an intruder before they even manage to get inside your home.
  2. It acts as a deterrent because, for example, which is easier to squat in – a property with or without an alarm? Many intruders will think twice before attempting to break into any property fitted with an alarm.
  3. Home insurance will work out cheaper for you as your home is better protected and there’s less chance of a break-in. If you have any sort of alarm, the insurance company will charge you less.
  4. A perimeter alarm protects more land than any other security system.

Requirements for installing a perimeter alarm

Installing outdoor detectors has its advantages, but for them to be effective and to ensure they can be fitted without any problems, the property must meet two requirements.

1- Ensure that the outdoor area is fenced off and that the cameras do not point towards the public highway, a neighbour’s house or any other location other than your own home. (This is a requirement under the Data Protection Act).

2- When the outdoor alarm is activated, ensure there are no pets in the protected area, as this would cause the alarm to go off repeatedly.

If the area you want to protect does not meet these requirements, it will be difficult to install a perimeter alarm.

But watch out! That doesn’t mean you can’t protect your home.

If you do not meet these two requirements, you can contact one of our advisers free of charge to explore other options for protecting your home.

Top companies specialising in perimeter alarms

Whilst it is true that there are perimeter alarms with no monthly fees, these are not the sort of alarms that guarantee greater security, as they merely send a notification to a mobile phone and little else.

Alarm systems with a service charge are connected to a security monitoring centre, which monitors the alarm system, verifies what is happening within a few seconds and alerts the police in the event of a burglary or squatting, as well as handling the maintenance of the equipment and all legal matters. Among the leading alarm companies, we would highlight Securitas, ADT and Prosegur.

Each of these companies works with different types of outdoor alarm systems; some install perimeter detectors without video, others with video, and others install different types of devices, such as curtain detectors or cameras with artificial intelligence. We recommend that you choose an alarm system that includes outdoor detectors with video, if possible, as these allow for better verification and a faster, more effective alert to the police.

If we look at the prices, the cheapest of them all is ADT, which has a monthly fee of 39.90 euros and no installation costs for the user.
