How much does a kilowatt cost today?

The price per kWh on the regulated market is determined daily on the basis of the energy price set on the wholesale market, known as the electricity pool.

A different price per kilowatt is set for each hour of the day, with peak demand hours being the most expensive, as the price varies according to production costs and demand.

In this table, we show you the price per kilowatt on the regulated market for each of the 24 hours of today.

The price per kWh for each day is published from 8.15 pm on the previous day.

The price per kilowatt on the regulated market can vary considerably from one day to the next, as there are several factors that influence the final price set in the electricity pool.

The main factors determining the price of energy on the wholesale market are:

– Renewable energy generation.

– The climate and weather conditions that affect renewable energy production.

– The price of gas on international markets.

– The market price of CO₂ emission allowances.

– The country’s energy demand.

That’s not always the case.

There is a misconception amongst some members of the public that the price per kilowatt on the regulated market is always lower because it is charged at cost price, but the reality is far from that.

There are several reasons why, in the free market, we can find tariffs with lower prices per kilowatt than in the regulated market, including the fierce competition between the many suppliers vying for customers by lowering their prices and adjusting their margins.

In situations such as the current one, where energy prices on the wholesale market are very high, we can find tariffs on the open market that allow us to pay considerably less.

Furthermore, we can find tariffs with a fixed price per kilowatt for 24 hours a day, which is locked in for several years, ensuring complete stability in our bills, with no nasty surprises and without being affected by rises in energy prices on the wholesale markets.

24-hour flat-rate tariffs are characterised by the fact that the price per kilowatt-hour is the same at all hours of the day.

This type of tariff offers the greatest stability, as – unlike the regulated market tariff, where the price per kilowatt-hour varies from day to day and hour to hour – with fixed tariffs you pay the same price per kilowatt-hour at all times of the day, every day.

Furthermore, some energy suppliers offer to freeze the price per kilowatt for one or more years, so that no matter how much electricity prices continue to rise, their customers will not be affected, as they have a price per kilowatt that has already been set and agreed in their contract.

Time-of-use tariffs are those in which the price per kilowatt-hour consumed varies across each of the three time bands into which the day is divided.

The three time slots are:

  • Peak times (the middle of the day, when prices are at their highest).
  • Flat rate (midday hours and the average price).
  • Off-peak (the times when demand is lowest and, therefore, the cheapest).

Time-of-use tariffs can also have a fixed price, meaning that every day you will pay the same price per kWh at the same time within each of those three time bands.

These types of tariffs are recommended for homes where electricity is mainly used at night and at weekends.

Time-of-use electricity bands are the periods of the day during which the price per kWh varies, mainly in the regulated market (PVPC). There are currently three bands: peak (the most expensive), standard (intermediate price) and off-peak (the cheapest). These bands apply to all households with a digital meter and a regulated tariff.

The key lies in when you use electricity. Using electrical appliances during off-peak hours can significantly reduce your monthly bill without changing your tariff. It’s not magic: it’s simply a matter of paying less for the same amount of electricity by taking advantage of times when demand is lower.

The price per kWh on the regulated market (PVPC) is not fixed: it changes every hour and is published daily. It depends on the wholesale electricity market, which is influenced by factors such as the price of gas, renewable energy generation, demand and even the weather.

This makes the PVPC a transparent option, but also an unpredictable one. Some days prices are very low, whilst on others they rise sharply. For this reason, this tariff works best for customers who can adapt their habits and use electricity during the cheapest times of the day.

Not always. In the free market, energy suppliers offer fixed prices or prices subject to agreed terms for a set period (usually 12 months). This provides stability and avoids any nasty surprises, even though the base price per kWh may be slightly higher than in the regulated market on days when electricity is cheap.

The real difference lies not only in the price, but also in your consumption pattern. If your usage is concentrated during peak hours or you are unable to adjust your timetable, a good open-market tariff may prove just as cost-effective – or even more so – than the PVPC.

The electricity price is now published daily and shows the cost per kWh on an hourly basis, which is particularly relevant for those on the regulated market. Checking this information allows you to clearly identify when electricity is cheapest and when it is best to avoid using it.

As well as keeping an eye on the price, it’s important to plan your electricity usage: scheduling washing machines, dishwashers or long loads for the cheapest times of day makes a real difference at the end of the month. It’s not about living by the clock, but about using the information to your advantage.
