Install an alarm system without an internet connection
Installing a home alarm system is a trend that has been on the rise for years; more and more homeowners and tenants are deciding to install an alarm to protect their homes, largely thanks to the sector’s growing professionalism, improvements in technology and, it must be said, more affordable prices. There has also been a surge in the installation of alarm systems to prevent break-ins at second homes or holiday destinations, where this type of crime has been on the rise.
In some of these homes we don’t have internet, so many people are wondering:
Can I set an alarm if I don’t have an internet connection?
The answer is yes.
You don’t need an internet connection to install an alarm at home or anywhere else. Security systems from the leading alarm companies stay connected to the monitoring centre (CRA) and to the user via a special SIM card (similar to those used in mobile phones), which connect via GPRS, G2 and G3 signals – the most advanced ones.
All alarm companies include the SIM card in the basic connection fee, so you don’t need to worry about that. Although you don’t need an internet connection to set up a home alarm, your home must meet a couple of minimum requirements.
I’ll tell you about them now, but let me clarify one thing:
Bear in mind that if you decide to install a private alarm system not connected to a monitoring centre (a ‘no-subscription’ alarm), you will need to have an internet connection or get a SIM card, and take care of its setup and maintenance yourself. That’s why, at Quécomparo.es, we always recommend installing an alarm connected to a central monitoring station (CRA), because as well as being safer and more effective – and providing a security service that you don’t get with private alarms – you won’t have to worry about any of the technical aspects of the system.
Requirements for installing a home alarm system
Firstly, you need a minimum level of mobile coverage, but it’s so minimal that we have it in 95 per cent of cases. The only thing you absolutely must have in order to install a security system in your home or business is a continuous supply of electricity.
All you need to install an alarm is a power supply.
The property must have a 220V DC power supply (which is standard in most homes), just like any other small electrical appliance.
Even so, in most cases, alarm systems are fitted with batteries that provide between 24 and 48 hours of backup power in the event of a power cut.
These batteries enable the system to continue operating in the event of a power cut, and also send a notification to the user so that they are aware of the situation and can restore the power supply if necessary.
Requirements your home must meet in order to install an alarm:
- Mobile coverage (GPRS)
- Electricity supply
It is not necessary to install an alarm:
- Internet
- Landline
Alarms without an internet connection
As we have seen, we do not need to have an internet connection at home because some systems connect via their own SIM card, and in these cases it is best to take out a contract with one of the alarm companies available on the market. Here is a comparison table of the three main alarm companies operating in Spain: Securitas Direct, Prosegur and ADT.

These days, these companies offer highly advanced equipment and a very efficient service, with highly competitive home packages where everything is included in a monthly subscription fee. What’s more, they take care of the technical aspects for us, and if we want a squatter-deterrent alarm, a connection to a security monitoring centre with a police alert is essential.
