When is it advisable to opt for a fixed-rate tariff with different time bands?
- Efficient energy use: If you are able to adjust your energy consumption and carry out energy-intensive activities during off-peak hours – such as doing a wash or using high-energy appliances – you can take advantage of the lower prices during this period and reduce your electricity bill.
- Tailored consumption times: If your daily routine involves higher energy consumption during off-peak hours – for example, if you work night shifts or use more energy at night – a time-of-use tariff may be suitable, as you can benefit from lower prices during your peak consumption hours.
- Residential use at weekends: If your energy consumption is higher at weekends, a time-of-use tariff may be advantageous, as prices during off-peak periods are generally lower on those days.
- Savings on your electricity bill: If you’re mindful of your energy consumption and can adapt your usage patterns to times when prices are lower, you can make significant savings on your electricity bill with a time-of-use tariff.
However, it is also important to bear in mind a few considerations:
- Flexibility of usage times: If your usage times do not easily fit within the set time bands, you may not be able to take full advantage of the lower prices during off-peak hours, which could limit the benefits of this tariff.
- More complex tariffs: Time-of-use tariffs are generally more complex than standard tariffs, as they require greater attention to make the most of the lower prices. You must be prepared to monitor and adjust your consumption to achieve the desired benefits.
- Possible price fluctuations: Depending on the energy market and specific conditions, prices in the different time bands may vary over time. This means that the financial benefits of the tariff may change, and you should be prepared for possible price fluctuations.
Generally speaking, it is advisable to opt for an index-linked electricity tariff with different time bands – peak and off-peak – if you can tailor your energy consumption to the times when prices are lowest and maximise the financial benefits. Assess your consumption habits and the specific terms of the tariff to determine whether it is the most suitable option for you.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of time-banded tariffs and market-price tariffs?
Advantages
Potential savings on your electricity bill: One of the main advantages of these tariffs is the potential for significant savings on your electricity bill. By making the most of the lower-priced time bands, you can reduce your energy costs.
Flexibility in consumption: These tariffs give you the opportunity to tailor your energy consumption to the lower-priced time bands. If you are able to schedule activities that use more energy during off-peak hours, you can maximise your savings and optimise your energy use.
Consumption awareness: With a time-of-use tariff, you become more aware of your energy consumption and the times when costs are highest. This can encourage you to adopt more efficient habits and reduce unnecessary consumption during peak hours.
Disadvantages
It requires a change in habits: To reap the benefits of these tariffs, you need to adjust your consumption habits and tailor them to the off-peak times. This may require changes to your daily routines and more careful planning of your activities.
Greater complexity: Time-of-use tariffs are more complex than standard tariffs. You must pay attention to the times and prices for each time band, which means you’ll need to monitor and analyse your energy consumption more closely.
Possible penalties for exceeding limits: Some tariffs may impose limits or restrictions on consumption during the lower-price time bands. If you exceed these limits, you may be charged extra or face higher prices, which could reduce the expected financial benefits.
It is important to consider these advantages and disadvantages and assess how they align with your consumption habits and personal needs. Furthermore, it is always advisable to compare different tariff options and consult your electricity supplier for detailed information on the available tariffs and how they apply to your specific situation.

What are Lucera’s electricity tariffs and how much do they cost?
Lucera offers two electricity tariffs. The Fixed-Price Tariff charges 0.125 €/kWh 24 hours a day, with a standing charge of 0.088 €/kW during peak and off-peak hours. The price remains fixed for 12 months. The Cost-Based Tariff charges for electricity at Lucera’s market cost, with different rates for off-peak, standard and peak periods that change each month. Standby power is charged at the regulated rate: €0.076/kW per day during peak hours and €0.002/kW per day during off-peak hours. In addition, there is a service charge of €4.90 per month plus tax (€6.23 including tax).
Prices are exclusive of tax. On top of these comes the social tariff levy, around €0.75 per month, which is paid by customers of all energy suppliers. Neither tariff has a minimum contract period and the energy is 100 per cent renewable.
For an average household (287 kWh per month and 4.6 kW), the fixed-price tariff works out at around €77 per month including tax. With the cost-based tariff, the bill varies depending on the month: based on the average over the last 12 months, it would be around €74, but in September 2026 it would have cost around €108. You can see the details in the information sheets for the fixed-price tariff and the cost-based tariff.
Which Lucera tariff is right for me?
It depends on how much risk you’re prepared to take. The fixed-price tariff guarantees you €0.125/kWh for 12 months: around €77 a month for an average household, whatever happens in the market. The cost-price tariff may work out slightly cheaper over the course of the year – around €74 a month on average – but in some months the cost can skyrocket.
September 2026 is a good example. With the cost-based tariff, electricity cost an average of €0.242/kWh (€0.216 during off-peak hours, €0.224 during standard hours and €0.311 during peak hours). An average household would have paid around €108 that month, some €31 more than with the fixed-price tariff. In months with plenty of sun and wind, however, the cost-based tariff works out considerably cheaper.
Choose the fixed-price tariff if you want to know exactly how much you’ll be paying or if you can’t afford a month with high bills. Choose the cost-price tariff if you can shift your consumption to off-peak hours, follow the market price of electricity and accept higher bills in some months in exchange for savings over the course of the year. If you have a low contracted power rating and use little electricity, this is also beneficial for you, as the regulated power rate is the cheapest on the market.
What is the €4.90 Lucera fee for?
Under the cost-price tariff, Lucera charges for energy and standing charge at cost price, with no mark-up. Its profit comes from a fixed monthly fee of €4.90 plus tax (€6.23 including tax). This is what Lucera charges for its service, and you pay it regardless of whether you use a lot or a little.
This model is transparent: you know exactly how much the company makes each month. But there is one aspect worth bearing in mind. If you use very little electricity, the fixed charge accounts for a larger proportion of your bill. At 100 kWh a month, the fixed charge adds around €0.06 per kWh. At 400 kWh a month, it’s barely €0.015.
For this reason, Lucera’s cost-price tariff is generally more suitable for households with average or high consumption. For small flats with low consumption, a fixed tariff without a standing charge may work out cheaper.
By how much might Lucera’s fixed tariff increase when I renew my contract?
The price under the fixed-rate tariff remains the same for 12 months from the date of registration. After this period, Lucera reviews it in line with market conditions and must give you 30 days’ notice. If you are not happy with the new price, you can cancel your contract at no cost, as there is no minimum contract period.
Lucera sets a cap on this increase. At the first review, the price of electricity cannot exceed €0.160/kWh excluding tax, even if its calculation formula would result in a higher figure. This represents a maximum increase of around €0.035/kWh, or about €13 more per month for an average household.
In practice, the renewal price is likely to be below this limit. However, it is a good time to compare with other suppliers before accepting the new terms.
What do Lucera’s customers think?
Opinions are divided depending on the platform. In the reviews that Lucera compiles on its own website, the average rating is 4.7 out of 5. On Google, it has a rating of 3.9 out of 5, with over 600 reviews. Customers highlight the transparency of the cost-price tariff, the app and the fact that the monthly bill clearly shows how much the company retains.
The most common complaints relate to fluctuations in the cost-price tariff on bills, particularly during months when prices are high. There are also complaints about estimated bills, when the supplier fails to submit the meter reading on time; these are then adjusted in the following bill.
Before signing up for the cost-price tariff, check the prices for the last few months on the Lucera website. That way, you’ll know how much your bill might vary and whether it’s worth it compared to the fixed-rate tariff.
Is Lucera cheaper than other suppliers?
With its fixed-rate tariff, Lucera is among the cheapest. For an average household (287 kWh per month and 4.6 kW), it costs around €77 a month – the same as Endesa Conecta and niba Zen, and slightly less than Naturgy’s Pay-As-You-Go tariff (€78). It is considerably cheaper than Iberdrola’s Plan Online (€90) and Plenitude’s Fácil Plus (€84).
Furthermore, Lucera’s fixed-rate tariff has two advantages over some of these other providers. It does not rely on discounts that expire after a year, unlike Endesa Conecta. And it has a guaranteed maximum price at the first renewal.
With the cost-price tariff, the comparison varies from month to month. It works in the same way as Plenitude Tendencia or niba Flex, but with a higher monthly fee (€4.90 per month, compared with €3.50 for Plenitude). At the same market price, Lucera works out between €1 and €2 per month more expensive than Plenitude Tendencia.
