When is it advisable to opt for the ‘Sin más’ tariff at market rates?

Flexible energy use: If you are able to adjust your consumption to different times of day, taking advantage of periods of lower demand – and therefore lower prices – this tariff could be beneficial. You can schedule your most energy-intensive activities, such as doing the washing or using household appliances, during periods when energy costs are lowest.

Awareness and control of consumption: With time-of-use tariffs, you become more aware of your consumption patterns and how they affect your energy bills. This allows you to make informed decisions and optimise your consumption to reduce your costs. You can identify times of peak demand and avoid or reduce consumption during these periods when prices are higher.

Flexibility in planning: If you are able to adapt your energy usage times to the lower-cost periods, this tariff offers you flexibility in planning your daily activities. You can adjust your working, leisure or rest times to take advantage of the lower price periods and make savings on your electricity bill.

Potential for additional benefits: As you are on a market-price tariff, you are exposed to fluctuations in the energy market. If you are able to monitor prices closely and make strategic energy purchases when prices are at their lowest, you can gain additional benefits by taking advantage of favourable purchasing opportunities.

However, there are also some considerations to bear in mind:

It requires monitoring and planning: To make the most of the benefits of a time-of-use tariff at market prices, you need to monitor prices regularly and plan your consumption accordingly. This may require greater attention and effort on your part.

Adaptability to variable schedules: If your consumption times are fixed or you cannot adjust your activities to the lower-cost time bands, it may be more difficult to derive significant benefits from this tariff. It is important to assess your ability to adapt and your flexibility before opting for this option.

Potential complexity in management: Time-of-use tariffs based on market prices can be more complex to manage compared to standard tariffs. You must keep an eye on timings and prices, and constantly monitor fluctuations in the energy market to make informed decisions.

Advantages

Potential savings: As rates vary according to time-of-use bands, you can take advantage of periods of lower demand and lower prices to concentrate your energy consumption. This can result in significant savings on your electricity bill if you are able to time your most energy-intensive activities to coincide with the lower-cost bands.

Flexibility in consumption: With time-of-use tariffs, you have the flexibility to schedule your energy-consuming activities during the cheapest periods. You can make the most of the lower-price periods to carry out tasks that require higher energy consumption, such as using household appliances or charging electric vehicles.

Awareness and control of consumption: With a time-of-use tariff, you become more aware of your consumption patterns and how they affect your energy bills. This enables you to make informed decisions about when and how to use energy, which can lead to a reduction in excessive consumption and more efficient energy use.

Disadvantages

Greater complexity in management: Time-of-use and market-price tariffs can be more complex to understand and manage compared to standard tariffs. They require regular monitoring of prices and greater effort to manage consumption strategically. This can be challenging for some people who prefer a simpler option.

Need to adjust daily routines: To make the most of the benefits of time-of-use tariffs, you need to adapt your daily routines and schedule your energy consumption during the cheapest periods. This may require changes to your timetable and consumption habits, which some people may find inconvenient.

Dependence on energy market fluctuations: Market-based tariffs mean you are exposed to fluctuations in energy prices. If prices rise, your energy costs may also increase, which can lead to greater uncertainty regarding your long-term energy costs.

In many cases! If you’re the type of person who plans ahead and likes to have complete control over your monthly expenses, this rate plan is ideal for you.

It’s also an excellent option if you work from home and need a steady supply of electricity throughout the day, without worrying about price spikes during peak hours. Plus, if you run a business that requires high energy consumption 24 hours a day, this rate guarantees you a stable and competitive price at all times.

Advantages

Predictable costs: As the price remains fixed 24 hours a day, it is easier to forecast and control monthly energy costs.

Simplicity: There is no need to worry about price fluctuations at different times of the day.

Flexibility in energy use: You can use electricity at any time of day without worrying about additional costs.

Disadvantages

Potential lack of adaptability: If you are able to adjust your consumption to times of lower demand, you may not be making the most of savings opportunities.

Potential lack of incentives to save energy: As the price is fixed, there is no direct incentive to reduce consumption during peak demand hours or to implement energy-efficiency measures.

It may not be the most cost-effective option for users whose consumption patterns are concentrated during off-peak hours.

  1. Regular and predictable energy use: If your energy consumption pattern is consistent and predictable throughout the day, a tariff with stable prices and time-of-use bands may be suitable. This is particularly true if your energy requirements remain relatively constant throughout the day and you do not have the flexibility to adjust your activities to periods of lower cost.
  2. Consumption outside peak time bands: If your most energy-intensive activities take place mainly outside periods of peak demand, a tariff with stable prices and time-of-use bands may be a good option. This will allow you to avoid peak time bands, when prices may be higher, and make the most of times when costs are lower.
  3. The need for cost stability: If you prefer to have predictability in your electricity bills and avoid fluctuations in energy prices, a tariff with stable prices may be the best option. This gives you greater certainty about your monthly costs and makes it easier to plan your budget.
  4. Consistent energy consumption throughout the year: If your energy consumption remains relatively constant throughout the year, without significant seasonal variations, a tariff with stable prices and time-of-use bands may be more suitable. In this case, you do not need a tariff that fluctuates according to demand or seasonal changes.

Gana Energía offers three electricity tariffs for homes with a capacity of up to 15 kW. The 24-Hour Tariff has a fixed price: €0.139/kWh for 12 months. The Time-of-Use Tariff has three fixed prices: €0.090/kWh during off-peak hours, €0.114/kWh during standard hours and €0.181/kWh during peak hours. Both tariffs charge for standing power at €0.099/kW per day during peak and off-peak periods. The Market Price Tariff charges for electricity at cost price plus €0.167 per day (around €5 per month), with standing power charged at a regulated rate: €0.076/kW per day during peak periods and €0.002/kW per day during off-peak periods.

All prices are exclusive of tax. None of the three tariffs have a minimum contract period; they compensate for surplus energy from solar panels at 0.06 €/kWh, and the energy is 100 per cent renewable.

For an average household (287 kWh per month and 4.6 kW), the 24-Hour Tariff costs around €86 per month including tax. The Time-of-Use Tariff, based on typical consumption patterns, costs around €79. You can find further details in the information sheets for the 24-Hour Tariff, the Time-of-Use Tariff and the Market Price Tariff.

For almost all households, the Time-of-Use Tariff works out cheaper than the 24-Hour Tariff, even if you don’t change your habits. Both tariffs have the same power rating, but the Time-of-Use Tariff charges less during off-peak hours (€0.090/kWh) and standard hours (€0.114/kWh) than the single rate of the 24-Hour Tariff (€0.139/kWh). With a typical consumption pattern (25 per cent during peak hours, 30 per cent during standard hours and 45 per cent during off-peak hours), the average cost per kWh works out at around €0.120, and your bill drops from around €86 to around €79 a month.

The 24-Hour Tariff is only better value if more than 45 per cent of your consumption takes place during peak hours: from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 18.00 to 22.00, Monday to Friday. This is unusual, unless you’re working from home with the air conditioning or electric heating on during those hours. Gana Energía itself estimates that a typical household uses 72 per cent of its electricity during off-peak and standard hours without even realising it.

The Market Price Tariff varies from month to month. Over the last six months, electricity has cost an average of €0.156/kWh during off-peak hours, €0.168/kWh during standard hours and €0.242/kWh during peak hours – which is more expensive than the Time-of-Use Tariff. At present, for an average household, this works out at around €86 a month – almost the same as the 24-Hour Tariff – although Gana Energía offers a €5 monthly fuel rebate.

With this tariff, you pay for your electricity at the price Gana Energía pays on the wholesale market, hour by hour, with no mark-up. The company’s only profit is a fixed fee of €0.167 per day, around €5 per month excluding tax. In return, Gana Energía gives you €5 per month back in fuel credits, so in practice its margin is offset if you use that credit.

The standing charge is billed at the regulated rate: €0.076/kW per day during peak hours and just €0.002/kW per day during off-peak hours. This is much cheaper than its fixed tariffs (€0.099/kW per day in both periods). With a 4.6 kW connection, you save around €17 a month on the standing charge alone, before tax.

Energy prices change every hour and every month. Over the last six months, they have been high (an average of €0.242/kWh at peak times), and this tariff has not worked out any cheaper than the tiered tariff. In months with plenty of sun and wind, however, prices drop significantly. If the market price spikes, you can switch to a fixed-rate tariff at any time, as there is no minimum contract period.

Gana Energía pays 0.06 €/kWh for surplus energy under its three electricity tariffs: 24 Hours, Time-of-Use and Market Price. This is the same rate paid by Repsol, Naturgy, Endesa and niba. The value of the surplus is deducted from the energy you consume from the grid on your bill.

In addition, Gana Energía has a Virtual Wallet, its version of a virtual battery. If, in a given month, you generate more surplus energy than you can offset, the excess isn’t lost: it’s saved as a credit for future bills.

If you have solar panels, the best option for you is the tariff offering the cheapest electricity during the hours when you draw power from the grid, which is usually at night and at weekends. In the case of Gana Energía, this is the Time-of-Use Tariff, with the off-peak rate at €0.090/kWh.

You can sign up online in a few minutes via their website or by telephone. You’ll need the account holder’s national identity number, the CUPS (which appears on any electricity bill) and a bank account. Gana Energía will take care of cancelling your previous contract, and the switch won’t result in any power cuts.

The freephone customer service number is 900 535 689, available Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 8.45 pm. For faults, there is a 24-hour helpline on 911 774 694. You can also manage bills, power levels and tariff changes via the customer portal and the app.

As an optional service, it offers “Tu Asistente 24 Horas Luz” (€0.137 per day plus VAT), which covers emergencies relating to electricity, plumbing, locksmith services and glazing, as well as up to 3 hours of handyman services per year. Gana Energía also has a “Plan Amigo” scheme offering discounts for referring friends and family.
