What is Endesa’s PVPC tariff with Energía XXI?

Energía XXI’s Voluntary Tariff for Small Consumers (PVPC) is the regulated electricity tariff on the electricity market. It is characterised by having 24 different prices – one for each hour of the day – set by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

The cost of electricity, based on electricity demand, is published one day in advance at 8.00 pm. The PVPC tariff is available only to customers with a contracted power rating of 10 kW or less with Energía XXI.

It is important to note that the PVPC tariff has no minimum contract period, which allows users to cancel the contract at any time. Bills are issued monthly and no discounts or special offers apply to the tariff, as the prices are set by the Government.

Furthermore, PVPC customers should bear in mind the concept of the ‘gas price cap’, which is included on their bills, but they are not aware of the specific details of the cost associated with this measure.

Moderate consumption: If your electricity consumption is moderate – in other words, you do not use excessive amounts of energy – the PVPC tariff may be a good option. It is designed for small consumers and is based on the wholesale electricity market price, which means it adjusts to fluctuations in the price of energy in real time. If your consumption is not very high, you can benefit from the more competitive prices offered by this tariff.

Time-of-use flexibility: The PVPC tariff has different time bands – such as peak, standard and off-peak – which vary according to electricity demand. If you are able to adjust your consumption to times of lower demand, such as off-peak hours, you could secure lower prices and save on your electricity bill. This tariff rewards those customers who can time their energy consumption to more favourable periods.

Monitoring and active management: The PVPC tariff requires more active monitoring and management on the part of the user. Prices vary according to supply and demand in the electricity market, so it is important to keep an eye on price fluctuations and adjust your consumption accordingly. If you are prepared to monitor and adapt your consumption based on time bands and prices, you can make significant financial savings with this tariff.

Energy awareness: If you are mindful of your energy consumption and make an effort to use electricity efficiently, the PVPC tariff may be suitable for you. By having a clear understanding of your consumption patterns and being able to time your usage to the most favourable periods, you can optimise your consumption habits and achieve significant savings.

However, there are also some considerations to bear in mind:

Greater complexity: The PVPC tariff is more complex than fixed-price tariffs. It requires more active monitoring of prices and more rigorous management of consumption according to time-of-use bands. If you prefer a simpler and more predictable tariff, this may not be the best option for you.

Greater risk of price fluctuations: As the PVPC tariff is based on wholesale electricity market prices, there is a greater risk of price fluctuations. At times of high demand or during special circumstances in the energy market, prices may be higher. This could result in higher bills if consumption is not properly monitored and adjusted.

The PVPC electricity tariff is recommended for those with moderate consumption, flexibility in their usage times, the ability to actively monitor and manage their consumption, and an awareness of energy use. However, it can be more complex and carries a greater risk of price fluctuations. Consider your individual needs and preferences, as well as your ability to adapt your consumption to the different time bands, before opting for this tariff.

Advantages

Market-based prices: The PVPC tariff is aligned with wholesale electricity market prices, meaning it more directly reflects the actual costs of energy. This can result in more competitive prices compared to fixed tariffs.

Opportunity to save: By adjusting your consumption to match off-peak time bands, you can benefit from lower prices during those hours and reduce your electricity bill. If you have the flexibility to use electricity at more favourable times, you can make significant savings.

Greater energy awareness: The PVPC tariff encourages awareness and active management of energy consumption. By being more involved in monitoring prices and adjusting your consumption according to time bands, you can develop more efficient and conscious habits when using electricity.

Disadvantages

Complexity and constant monitoring: The PVPC tariff requires active monitoring of prices and constant adjustment of consumption. Prices vary throughout the day and it is necessary to keep an eye on changes in order to take advantage of the times when prices are lowest. This can result in greater complexity and a greater time commitment on the part of the user.

Risk of price increases: Although the PVPC tariff can generally offer competitive prices, there is also a risk that prices may be higher at times of high demand or during specific market conditions. If consumption is not managed properly during the most expensive periods, this could result in higher bills.

Less predictability: Unlike fixed tariffs, where the price of electricity is known in advance, the PVPC tariff involves greater price volatility. This can make it difficult to forecast expenditure and adjust budgets.

In summary, the PVPC tariff offers the advantage of market-based prices and the potential for savings if consumption is timed to coincide with periods of lower demand. However, it also involves greater complexity, constant monitoring and the risk of higher prices at certain times.
Consider your ability to actively manage your consumption and your preferences regarding price stability before opting for this tariff.
