When is it advisable to choose a 24-hour flat-rate electricity plan?

In many cases! If you’re the type of person who plans ahead and likes to have complete control over your monthly expenses, this rate plan is ideal for you.

It’s also an excellent option if you work from home and need a steady supply of electricity throughout the day, without worrying about price spikes during peak hours. Plus, if you run a business that requires high energy consumption 24 hours a day, this rate guarantees you a stable and competitive price at all times.

Advantages

Predictable expenses: Since the price remains fixed 24 hours a day, it’s easier to forecast and control monthly energy costs.

Simplicity: You don’t have to worry about price fluctuations at different times of the day.Flexibility in energy use: You can use electricity at any time of day without worrying about additional costs.

Convenience: You don’t need to adjust your consumption habits based on different rate schedules.

Disadvantages

Potential lack of adaptability: If you’re able to adjust your consumption to times of lower demand, you may not be taking full advantage of savings opportunities.

Potential lack of incentives to save energy: With a fixed price, there is no direct incentive to reduce consumption during peak demand hours or to implement energy-efficient practices.

It may not be the most economical option for users whose consumption patterns are concentrated during off-peak hours.

Limitations for users with specific energy needs or unusual consumption schedules.

Efficient Night Owls: If you tend to perform energy-intensive tasks at night—such as doing laundry, using appliances, or working on projects that require lighting and electricity—a nighttime electricity rate is perfect for you. Take advantage of lower rates during nighttime hours and significantly reduce your energy costs.

Nighttime Businesses: If you run a business that operates primarily at night—such as a restaurant, nightclub, or delivery service—a nighttime electricity rate can be a cost-effective option. You’ll be able to keep your operations running at full capacity without incurring excessive energy costs during your peak hours.

Charging Electric Vehicles: If you own an electric vehicle and prefer to charge it at night, a nighttime electricity rate is ideal. You’ll be able to take advantage of lower rates to charge your vehicle, resulting in significant long-term savings.

Students and Remote Workers: If you’re a student or work from home and your study or work schedule extends late into the night, a nighttime electricity rate can be an excellent option. You’ll be able to take advantage of lower rates while you’re working or studying, without worrying about additional energy costs.

Advantages

Lower rates during nighttime hours: One of the main advantages of nighttime electricity rates is that they offer lower rates during hours of lower energy demand. This allows you to save on your electricity bills by taking advantage of periods when costs are lower.

Potential savings for nighttime activities: If you perform energy-intensive tasks at night—such as doing laundry, using appliances, or charging electric vehicles—a nighttime electricity rate allows you to carry out these activities at a lower cost, resulting in significant long-term savings.

Flexibility in energy use: With a nighttime electricity rate, you have the freedom to use electricity more intensively during nighttime hours without worrying about additional costs. This can be especially beneficial if you work from home, study, or run a nighttime business.

Disadvantages

Restrictions on usage times: One drawback of nighttime electricity rates is that they typically require you to adjust your usage to times of lower demand. This can be inconvenient if your usage habits don’t align with nighttime hours or if you need to use electricity at other times of the day.

Changes in sleep patterns: If you opt for a nighttime electricity rate and engage in energy-intensive activities at night, your sleep patterns may be affected. This can impact your overall well-being if you’re unable to maintain a proper balance between your energy use and rest.

It is not suitable for all users: Nighttime electricity rates are most beneficial for those who use a significant amount of electricity during the night. If your energy needs are spread more evenly throughout the day, you may not see as many financial benefits from this type of rate.

Families and households active on weekends: If your household is most active on weekends, a weekend electricity rate is ideal. You can take advantage of lower prices on those days to do household chores, cook, watch TV, or use your electronic devices without worrying about additional costs.

Second home or vacation home: If you have a second home or vacation home that you use mainly on weekends, this rate lets you enjoy lower energy costs during your stays. Make the most of your free time without worrying about excessive electricity bills.

Businesses or establishments with specific weekend hours: If you own a business, restaurant, bar, store, or any establishment that sees higher foot traffic on weekends, this rate is perfect for you. You’ll be able to operate your business with lower energy costs and maximize your profits during your busiest days.

Customers with energy consumption concentrated on the weekend: If your daily routine results in limited energy consumption on weekdays but you engage in energy-intensive activities on weekends, the weekend electricity rate gives you the opportunity to save by concentrating your energy expenses on those specific days.

Advantages

  • Lower prices on weekends.
  • Intensive use on days off.
  • Flexibility in energy use.

Disadvantages

  • Restrictions on consumption hours.
  • Changes in consumption habits.
  • Not suitable for all users.

The general terms and conditions that Iberdrola applies to its contracts are as follows:

  • No minimum contract term

  • Electronic billing
  • Access tariffs 2.0DHA or 2.1DHA
  • Fixed price for 5 years

For most households, the cheapest option is the Online 3-Period Plan, even though Iberdrola markets the Online Plan as its “best price.” The reason is the power rate. The Online 3-Period Plan charges 0.091 €/kW per day during peak hours and only 0.013 €/kW per day during off-peak hours. The Online Plan charges 0.119 and 0.078 €/kW per day. With 4.6 kW, that amounts to a difference of about 13 € per month just in power charges.

For an average household (287 kWh per month and 4.6 kW), the Online 3-Period Plan costs about €77 per month including taxes, based on a typical consumption breakdown (25% peak, 30% off-peak, and 45% low-peak). The Online Plan costs about €90 per month. Even if you use a lot of electricity during peak hours, the Online 3-Period Plan is still cheaper, because the savings on power charges offset the higher cost of electricity during peak hours.

Both plans have no minimum contract term, maintain the same price for 12 months, and are signed up for and managed exclusively online. You can find more details in the Online Plan and Online 3-Period Plan fact sheets.

For an average household (287 kWh per month and 4.6 kW), several companies offer better rates than Iberdrola’s Online Plan, which costs about 90 € per month. Endesa Conecta costs about €77 in the first year, Naturgy’s Pay-As-You-Go Rate costs about €74, and Plenitude’s Tendencia Rate—which is indexed—has averaged about €72 per month over the last 12 months.

The main drawback of the Online Plan is that the price per kWh is nearly €0.15, while its competitors range from €0.11 to €0.12. If you want to stay with Iberdrola, its own 3-Period Online Plan reduces the bill to about €77 per month, bringing it in line with the cheapest rates on the market.

Even so, the cheapest provider depends on how much you use, at what times, and how much power you’ve signed up for. Using your latest bill, at Quecomparo.es we compare all the offers for free and tell you which one would cost you the least.

The biggest savings come from switching from the Online Plan to the Online 3-Period Plan. For average usage, your bill drops from about 90 to about 77 € per month, because the rate during off-peak hours is nearly 10 times lower. Plus, if you run your washing machine, dishwasher, or charge your car at night or on the weekend, you’ll save even more.

The second step is to review your contracted power capacity. Every kW you reduce on the Online Plan saves about €72 per year, including taxes. If your circuit breakers never trip, you may have more power capacity than you need. The utility company handles the change, and there may be a regulated fee, but you’ll recoup that cost in just a few months.

Finally, check to see if your bill includes any additional services such as the Iberdrola Pack, Appliance Protection, or Electrical Emergencies. These aren’t necessary for your electricity service, and if you don’t use them, you can cancel them without changing your rate plan.
